About the Artwork:
The artwork was built around the idea of death and the learnings of stoicism. Death’s true nature is something that even the great cosmos cannot control. While we humans found a way to delay it through good health and the avoidance of danger, it will ultimately find us whether we are ready for it or not. What can we control? Remembering what life is all about as the stoic Marcus Aurelius says: ‘The happiness of your life depends upon the quality of your thoughts: therefore, guard accordingly, and take care that you entertain no notions unsuitable to virtue and reasonable nature…’ and ‘Our life is what our thoughts make it.’ Controlling your thoughts is a good step forward to renewing your mind, to be able to live this short life we are born into and grow and learn to become a better person every day. The best way to renew yourself is through nature itself. It is simple yet a dangerous place that, at least for me, reminds me of the idea that life is not supposed to be easy but a journey of self-growth, as George Bernard Shaw says: ‘Life isn’t about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself.’
