(Artist Bio)
The pictorial procedure of Pablo Martínez is similar to that of artists such as Peter Doig, both interested in making “memories abstraction” on canvas, in processing memories by passing them through the sieve of consciousness to filter the fine sand, the background noise , and rescue the imprint of an elusive gesture, of a light that in its transience is indelibly engraved on our minds.
Pablo navigates against the current of technological stubbornness to provide us with increasingly sophisticated artificial memories, which archive our experiences in increasingly precise image albums. This visual collection of fixed memories makes us similar to that Borgian character, Funes, incapable of forgetting. Remembering everything with the same clarity, he could not enjoy the mental digressions that selective memory provides; I was unaware of the unexpected pleasures that the “involuntary memory” sublimated by Proust provides.
In Pablo’s paintings, the fragmentary nature of the mnemonic imprint turns the experience into a relic; the space-time parameters are transgressed by the vagaries of memory; pictorial grammar translates cognitive mechanisms into the double game of hiding and unhiding, of blurring certain details and emphasizing others, in shading certain tones and saturating others. It transcribes the phenomenology of the introspective gaze into textures.
