About the Artwork:

Perihelion is one of a pair of paintings created to diagram the axial tilt of our Earth as we orbit the Sun. It is this tilt (23.5 degrees to be specific) that gives rise to the seasons, as well explaining the inversion of them between the Northern and Southern Hemisphere.

The geometric form shows Earth at Perihelion, the closest point to the sun along our slightly elliptical orbit. The Northern Hemisphere tilts away from the sun as the South tilts towards it. At this point, the pine forest in Canada that this structure inhabits is deep in the middle of Winter. Some curious moose have gathered to investigate as the forest is illuminated by a structure representing the position and angle of their planet at that very moment in time. – Erik Sherman

About the Artist:

(Artist Bio)

Erik Sherman is an artist driven by a passion for the intersection of art and science. With formal education in both visual communication and biology (primarily botany), Erik shares his fascination with the systems that govern our world through visual arts, primarily oil painting.

Natural laws such as entropy, evolution, and physics serve as his inspiration, embodying the greatest and most beautiful creative powers that exist. The intricacies of ecosystems, our solar system, and the universe at large are surreal in ways surpassing human imagination. Erik’s goal is to invite viewers to join in his celebration of these natural wonders.
