About the Artwork:
“When I heard that the piece would be in a square format, I saw this as a unique opportunity to utilize the space and create a frame that could only work within this size requirement. As I build compositions, I aim to create balance and symmetry, but I also keep in mind that things in life are rarely perfectly symmetrical. With this piece, I wanted to create a natural frame that seemed unforced, almost accidental. Today the reeds and swans line up perfectly, but tomorrow, more foliage may grow outside of the corners, and the illusion is gone.
For the subject matter, I wanted to paint a portrait of Ophelia from Shakespeare’s Hamlet. At the end of her life, Ophelia is overcome with madness and falls in a brook. She doesn’t try to save herself, but rather out of grief and sadness, allows herself to drown. I hoped to capture her quiet surrender to death.” – Lydia Guadagnoli
